The diverse forest, river and coastal areas of the Tsitsikamma National Park, Nature's Valley, Plettenberg Bay and surrounds offer a superb range of hiking trails.

Amidst the many hiking trails in South Africa, the challenging Otter Trail between Storms River Mouth and Nature's Valley along the coast of the Tsitsikamma National Park remains the countrys' premier hiking attraction.

Securing a convenient booking, whether as an individual or for your group, is not always guaranteed for there are lengthy pre-booked and waiting lists for the Otter Hiking Trail. In addition, many avid hikers do not have the time required available to them to experience the full trail whilst others may not necessarily be keen on back-packing all of their requirements for a fully self-contained hike of five days.

Whether you are battling to get onto the Otter Trail or not, but are still keen on stretching your legs on one or a combination of interesting day walks within easy access of Rocky Road Backpackers, then this is the ideal centralized hub at which to set up your accommodation and main meal base. From here you can explore the many alternative short hiking trail options available in and around spectacular Nature's Valley as well as the Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma regions on a "slack-pack" basis with only the days' requirements for the hiking trail to worry about.

Included in the mix of 2-hour to full-day options is a network of well marked trails in and around Nature's Valley. Of these, the coastal hike from Nature's Valley to the Salt River - locally well known as the 'Mini-Otter' - gives one easy access to an enduring impression of conditions along the Otter Trail. This hike also links with some of the other paths from and back to Nature's that can be individually hiked or linked for a more demanding adventure. Additional popular hikes are Day One of the Tsitsikamma Trail or the scenic Stinkwood Trail plus options of coastal hikes such as between the Bloukrans River to Nature's Valley and then the 5 - 6 hour hike from Nature's Valley to Keurbooms Beach. The hikes varying between 2 to 5 hours on Plettenberg Bay's  Robberg Peninsula are a ëmustí for any avid trail lover and the secure car park is within a 30 minute drive of our Rocky Road hub.

Drop-off and collection transfers can be arranged while local community eco-guides are available to lead the way through diverse forest trails or along the coastal cliff hikes and share their knowledge of the area.
